110. John 21:1-12 <The Net That Was Not Broken>
Even after having witnessed the resurrection of Christ, with the exception of Peter, the disciples were busy catching merely some fish (verse8). Shouldn¡¯t they have met the resurrected Jesus first? How is it that they put catching fish as their first priorities?
The answer is no. The disciples were maturing as they made one mistake after another. When they had received their first callings, they were nothing but immature broken nets. But, now, everything is different. They have become nets worthy to withstand the weights of broken lives and humanity into salvation.
Wouldn't other disciples have wanted to jump towards and greet Jesus, just as Peter had done? But, they were being considerate to Peter who had experienced the greatest failure. In the past, Peter had denied Jesus three times, and even cursed Him, and later, even at the news that Jesus had resurrected he hid himself in Galilee, completely disheartened filled with self criticism and guilt. Other disciples too must have wanted to swim towards Jesus and verify His resurrection and enjoy their reunification at the sight of him, however, they gave the first chance to do so to Peter who made the most decisive mistake in the past.
This is a completely different picture from when the disciples were fighting at the last supper over who would sit at the left and right hand of Jesus. There weren¡¯t a single conflict among them about who led the repentance of thousands after the Pentecost.
Other disciples, who had betrayed Jesus just as Peter, only in a less dramatic form, support and takes care of Peter¡¯s mess quietly without any complaints. They allow Peter to take the main stage and meet Jesus first, then they continue to obey the word of Christ which is to drag out the fish, having time later to greet Jesus themselves.
In fact, the disciples of the past would have given up on becoming Apostles and ran toward Galilee and tried to become fishermen. And they would have hated to reveal themselves of their attempts in front of the resurrected Jesus. They could have tried to blame this on Peter that they went back to fishing. However, the disciples were now completely different from someone who would have quickly dropped the nets and pointed fingers to Peter saying ¡®he started it!¡¯
Lives that have turned from God have transformed into the form of a beast, as described in the book of Romans. If one is to become capable of withstanding various sort of people, then he must be able to withstand the sinful and errorful personalities and characteristics of the people.
The disciples, in the past, have not been those nets that can hold in themselves the salvation of humanity, but instead, have been fighting each other. However, after they were faced with their sharp edges in their temperament and had realized they would eventually fail, they held on to the net and continued to obey the word of Christ till the end.
And, even after seeing errors and flaws of others, they kept silence and took it as they were. They kept on holding the net in stead of Peter, the net that could have been the symbol of a decisive mistake of Peter who had intentions of going back to become a fisher out of his own guilt. Now the disciples have become a net that would not break, and that is capable to withstand life of Peter and the flawed nature of humanity that had taken the form of a beast.
Forgiveness of the Gospel can be completed when failure is embraced. A weft can be formed when you admit your failure without God, and because of that you can depend on Him. Embracing others¡¯ failure, and knowing others are just as dependent on God as I am, and having an understanding heart and eyes can complete the net that will not break. This net that depends only on God, not on human lives, will not be broken. Do not beat yourself up too much over a mistake you made. Do not lean on others and be disappointed when something happens. Unbreakable net that does not rip can only be made when you give up everything that the world can provide and depend on Jesus.
